The Gallery’s surroundings and entrance
The Rzeczna Art Gallery – The Rybnik Centre for Art Education building is located in the very center of Rybnik, in the space between the City Market and the Multi-Level Parking, next to the TBS building. Approaching the Gallery is possible from all sides of the building, by a gentle slope or by stairs, depending on the side approached. Around the Gallery, there are wide sidewalks, lined with smooth and non-slip paving stones. The paving stones are dark gray.
Nearby the Gallery there are:
- bus stops Śródmieście Sąd (City Centre Court) (about 5 minutes away on foot);
- bus stops Śródmieście Plac Wolności (City Centre Freedom Square) (about 10 minutes away on foot);
- Rybnik Train Station (about 15 minutes away on foot);
- City Parking no. 1 – paid multi-level parking building with places for people with disabilities (about 3 minutes away on foot);
- bars for parking and securing bikes (on the left side of the main entrance, about 10 meters away).
The Gallery is located in a double-story building. It’s dark gray, the same color as the sidewalk. The main entrance is located inside a large niche, on the Eastern side of the building, on Rzeczna 1 Street. The entrance is completely glass-paneled, there are no contracting elements on it. The doorframe is gray. The doors are heavy and have to be opened manually. Next to the entrance there is no bell, entry phone or paging system.
Assistance
In matters of assistance at the entrance and during the touring of the Gallery please, if possible contact us at least two days beforehand by phone: 32 44 07 132 or by e-mail. The assistance may be canceled by phone or by email. Assistance is provided by the workers of the Gallery.
You can bring dogs to the gallery—both guide and service dogs, as well as your own four-legged friends. The dog must be kept on a leash, unless the dog’s assistance requires otherwise.
Gallery interior
All entrances and passages inside the Gallery have level access. All corridors and passages are very wide and enable unobstructed and easy passage and wheelchair access. All floors in the Gallery are gray, matte and non-slip. At the building’s entrances there are flat black mats. The walls are white. It’s very bright inside of the Gallery. On the ground floor, on the inside and outside of the building there are a lot of tall glass panels – spanning from the floor to the ceiling. The glass doesn’t have contrasting elements.
On the ground floor there are:
- A wide hall with a register and self-service, free lockers accessed by keys;
- A conference-education room;
- A Quiet Room with a sofa, table, pillows and blankets, with access to running water from the tap;
- Bathrooms: female with a changing station and male;
- An accessible bathroom dedicated to people with disabilities – with enough space to maneuver freely, the ability to transfer onto the toilet seat from the left, moving supinated grips and a wheelchair-accessible washbasin. The mirror is fixed, and the tap handle is elongated.
- In the bathroom, there is no paging system. The light switch is located on the left side of the door, outside the bathroom, and it needs to be turned on manually;
- A large elevator with a flat threshold and automatic doors – the opening button is located on the left side of the elevator doors, same as the buttons inside (they are raised and captioned with Braille). Inside the elevator, there is a mirror and a handrail. The elevator does not have light or sound signalisation;
- The stairs leading up to the first floor are wide, they don’t have separate handrails or contrast markings.
On the first floor, there are exhibitions, which have thorough descriptions along with a description of their accessibility in the “exhibitions” panel on our website. The space on the first floor is symbolically separated into two large rooms, which are connected by wide corridors. Each room has over 100 square meters. Depending on the exhibition, in the rooms there may be placed: pedestals with sculptures, art installations, showcase cabinets, and extra walls for exhibitions. On the walls, there may be hanging paintings, frames with photos, beliefs and other artistic objects.
The first floor can be accessed by stairs or by an elevator. On the first floor it’s comfortable to move around in a wheelchair or with a stroller, there is a lot of space to maneuver around the exhibits.
Attention!
During sunny weather on the half-floor, there may occur the effect of being blinded by a flash of light reflecting off of the white walls.
Although it’s quiet inside the Gallery, the Gallery’s space is open and when someone is talking, there’s a lot of echo, and the sounds (for example from the phone) reverberate loudly. On the walls in the passages in the hall, there are hung paintings, and in the main space there is a white couch and documents with sculptures, some of them weakly contrasting with their surroundings.
